Apple has taken preliminary steps toward developing and releasing a new mobile device to the market. The company is shifting gears as wearable mobile devices like Google Glass steal the lime-light away from flagship products like the iPad and iPhone. Having taken notice of Google’s mobile moves, Apple may be poised to push back in a field of fierce competition.

The iWatch was recently trademarked in Japan and Russia. This symbolic legal move shows Apple’s intention to push aggressively into the new realm of wearable devices. While speaking at the AllThingsD conference in May, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook hinted at the company’s strategy to move into the wearable device market.

Google has been on a tear over the past few years, nipping at Apple’s heels through rapid innovation and sheer determination. The list of achievements goes on and on, from dominating search to creating self driving cars, Google is pushing forward on every technology front while many critics view Apple as an over the hill behemoth.

As an iPhone app developer in Las Vegas the introduction of a new wearable iOS device has the potential to unlock an immense amount of value for users and developers alike. The iPhone app developer community is closely watching for signs that Apple may push forward with disruptive wearable devices like the iWatch.

Only time will tell whether this is a defensive play or baby steps in the first major product since the passing of former CEO Steve Jobs.
