On January 9, 2007, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled his company’s latest creation: a smartphone that he believed was going to become a “revolutionary product” that would “change everything.”

Time has proven him right. As of the final quarter of 2013, over 420 million iPhones have been sold worldwide. Even so, the iPhone’s early days weren’t without their problems. When Jobs first introduced Apple’s new smartphone to the world, its operational technology was still suffering from numerous glitches that prevented it from being publicly released until June of 2007. To compensate, Jobs was forced to use specially outfitted prototypes to ensure nothing would go wrong during demonstrations. At the time, industry insiders considered the company’s commitment to the technology to be a major gamble.

Over the next few months, Apple’s tech team worked tirelessly to get rid of the glitches before the product went up for sale. They succeeded; Apple then developed and released the iPad tablet, and the rest is tech industry history.

iPad app developers have been major beneficiaries of the smartphone and tablet revolution. Even though Apple’s revolutionary creation prompted competitors to develop worthy rivals, the iPhone still enjoys a privileged market position. As of the end of 2013, the latest numbers suggest that the iPhone holds 40 to 50 percent of the smartphone market in the United States.

As new iPhone and iPad releases continue to build on the brand’s staggering success, iPhone app developers in Atlanta and around the country have benefited from incredible new opportunities. One of the differentiating factors that has contributed to the iPhone’s success was Apple’s dedication to provide robust resources and support for the developer community. Since the iPhone’s launch more than 200,000 iOS app developer have released software for Apple’s iOS mobile devices.
